Increased costs and competition for marketers in March

This month was a significant one for the Fiksu indexes, as it marked the first time in history that the cost to acquire loyal app users (CPLU) surged passed the $3 mark. While hitting a historic high, this number isn’t surprising since it points a larger trend of rising costs and steadily growing competitive pressures observed across the landscape. It’s all getting more expensive: As predicted in a recent report from eMarketer, mobile advertising spend will overtake web advertising by 2016. What’s more, the majority of ad spending is happening inside apps – not the mobile Web. This is raising competition…..

This represents a 12 percent growth month-over-month and a marked 61 percent leap since January 2014. For app marketers, a key takeaway from October is…..

App Marketing Costs Soar in September

This month’s Fiksu Index showed app marketing costs hit an all-time high.  Following the launches of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus and Apple iOS 8 release, the cost for marketers to acquire loyal users (CPLU) reached $2.25. CPLU increased 21 percent from August, and 34 percent since September 2013. Taking a peek at the increasing costs to acquire loyal users over a two-year time period (2012-2014), we see an upward sloping trend line – demonstrating that marketers continue to face an environment of increasing costs and competitive forces. Adding to the flurry of activity this month was the influx…..

August Index Reflects Slowdowns; Impact of iPhone 6 Launch on App Use and Marketing Spend

August was a ‘lazy’ month for vacationers, app users, and for app marketers, demonstrated by lowered app install activity on both iOS and Android and lower marketing spends. The Cost Per Loyal User (CPLU) Index, which measures the cost of acquiring a loyal user for brands who actively market their apps, came in at $1.86, representing a 6 percent decrease from last month’s index. Users were less active with apps in August, but marketers were also spending less. Both Android and iOS Cost Per Install (CPI) dropped – down 31 percent month-over-month and 26 percent year-over-year on Android, and on…..

July Index Shows Makings of a Blockbuster Year

Have you gone for a hike in the mountains this summer? Well, then you’re following in similar footsteps as app marketing costs – which have continued to climb in July’s Index. The Cost Per Loyal User (CPLU) Index, which measures the cost of acquiring a loyal user for brands who proactively market their apps, came in at $1.97. This represents a 9 percent increase year-over-year and the second-highest peak in the four year-history of the Fiksu Indexes. While the cost to acquire loyal users continues its steady ascent, so does Cost Per Install, tracking the cost per app install directly…..

App Marketing Costs Hit All-time High in June

The indexes have made history this month, as the Cost Per Loyal User (CPLU) Index breached the $2 threshold for the first time in its four years. Attributed to a perfect storm of summer consumer behaviors, world events and Apple moves, June has ranked as the most expensive month ever for capturing and retaining loyal users. While the cost of a loyal user continues to rise, Cost Per Install declined in June, particularly for gaming apps. The Fiksu CPI Index for iOS plummeted to $0.98, down 23 percent from May. For iOS games, CPI dropped even further to $0.85 from…..

App Marketing Costs Climb as the Competition Slows in the Top Ranks, Finds April Index

April “showered” marketers whose apps sit outside of the top 200 with a great opportunity to get increased visibility from their marketing spend as the big brands dialed back on spending before gearing up for their summer campaigns. The Indexes saw an increase in app marketing costs as dollars continued to pour in throughout April, especially from small and mid-sized publishers. Meanwhile, the App Store Competitive Index, which measures download volume among the top 200 ranked apps, dropped 25 percent, to 5.34M from March’s 7.1M peak. It should be noted that this is not reflective of the broader app landscape,…..
